on politics: where is your heart?

I’ve found myself joking a lot about how I’m holding off on getting my citizenship until after the elections in case I need to flee back to my home country. But as with anything, the more I joke about it, the more I begin to really ask myself- “where IS your heart in all of this?”
When it comes to politics, I try to stay as far from it as possible, not because I don’t want to get into some debate- if you know me then you know that I’m competitive- But for me politics touches a very sensitive part of my heart that I believe the Lord is still working through. Having a background of family members in politics and seeing the different things that can come out of that, let’s just leave it at the fact that there are some wounds there for me…
It’s funny though because having officially been in this country more than I have in my birth country, Gabon, I still kinda get to choose to sit on the outside and watch. Granted I don’t have voting rights, but believe me I have an opinion. As I watch social media explode with endorsements of different political parties (which typically starts with “I’m not telling you who to vote for, but…” And “I’m just going to leave this right here” statements, I sensed myself begin to sink into the fears that many of you are drowning in. I began to hear the answer to the question I’ve been asking myself and I realized-

Sam, you are living in fear. You are living in hopelessness and you are entrusting your future to a political party.

…And here’s where I start preaching to myself!
STAHHPPP!!! My pastor has said so many things that have become a part of my everyday language and He has reminded us a few times of this truth- God is SEATED on His throne. He is NOT freaking out about what’s going to happen if Trump, Clinton, Sanders, Rubio, etc wins the election. In fact, whatever happens will do so under HIS authority and HIS sovereignty! And REGARDLESS of any of that He is STILL good and HIS Lordship still reigns over ALL of the earth. All of it.

God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne. Psalm 47:8

O Lord, God of our fathers, are you not God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you. 2 Chronicles 20:6

What would life look like if we truly believed and trusted that? I tell you what, we’d be more attentive to see that the world is full of hopelessness and that these are such sweet times to tell people of the hope we have in Christ.

Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. Hebrews 6:17-20a

Am I saying don’t care? Absolutely not- what I am saying is search your heart, ask God to show you where you’re putting your hope, in fact ask God to move in the heart of the next president of this nation, and most importantly- ask God to change YOUR heart in the midst of the chaos and uncertainty of your future.

 -End of self-preaching-

In addition to that- I’ve mentioned my own brokenness and hurt with politics, but I do and firmly believe that if you have the right to vote you NEED to exercise that right. If you’re skeptical about politicians and have your own trust issues(welcome to the party) I challenge you to look up politics in other nations… You are blessed to have such a freedom. GO VOTE! Definitely educate yourself, but DO IT!
As always! Pray for me and know that I’m doing the same for you.
